Coneys at Hardees

If you know one thing about me it is that I am from Detroit and I love a good Coney. And by Coney I don't mean rabbit (I do like rabbit but that is neither hare nor there). If you are asking 'what is a Coney' it is short for Coney Island and it is a type of chili dog covered in a particular type of chili. All Coneys are chili dogs but not all chili dogs are Coneys, hence the capital C. At its essence a Coney is 5 things: soft bun, good beef hot dog, Coney chili, mustard, white onions. In that order they are greater than the sum of their parts

What the Advertising says:
Nothing. I have never seen an advertisement for this item. Oddly enough the item doesn't even appear on the website. I am thinking it is a participating store only deal.

Hype: Jumbo huh? Well, its not a footlong. Perhaps the dog is slightly bigger than the ones you get from a Oscar Meyer. But it is about as big as I would expect from any restaurant. If you say jumbo I expect jumbo and I will call out out on it!

Taste: They pretty much nailed it. I have eaten an uncountable number of Coneys, some good, and some really good. The (chili dog) Coney from Hardees ranks right up there with the big boys like National Coney Island and just about every mom and pop place in good ol' Detroit. The secret is that they nailed the chili, or they are buying it from the same place as my other favorites. Its spot on. I am not sure what kind of hotdog they are useing and that keeps the item from a perfect score. Also depending on where you go your dogs may have been sitting around a while and dry out, beware. Thankfully my Hardees is very busy and their food gets cycled pretty fast.

Appearance and ease of consumption: Looks like a coney, tastes like a coney. One little nitpick, they put the mustard under the chili which obscures it from view. Its there but you might not see it. As any fast food exec will tell you eating is part visual so proper construction is a necessity. As with any chili dog, this is sit down food. Eating it on the go is a hazard to good work shirts everywhere, and mustard stains like a bitch.
